There's a group I've liked since childhood called "The Boarding Party". In addition to being wonderful musicians and singers, they were all friends of my father when I was growing up. My sister and I used to enjoy listening to them sing their sea shanties. They produced two records in the 80s, the second one being in 1987. My father had the records, and I had tapes made from the records. That's right folks tapes.

When I got my first CD burner, I recorded the tapes to my computer and made myself some pretty low grade CDs of this music. Downright painful to listen to. This was before MP3 technology and before CD burners were as prevalent as they are now. To give you an idea, blank CDs were a BARGAIN if I could find them at $10 each. And they never had them in stores. It was a special order item.

The first album is called 'Tis Our Sailing Time and a few years ago, they made it available on CD. So I bought it, naturally. The second one, Fair Winds and a Following Sea, was not. Due to the way it was recorded, they could not easily transfer it to the media necessary to create CDs. Doesn't really make sense to me.

Anyway, they also recorded a third album which had not be released due to a variety of issues. One of the singers, Jonathan Eberhart, wrote most of the liner notes. (He also has an album my father played on called Life's Trolley Ride.) Well, he had been very sick for a long time, pretty much since I was a teenager. And nobody else wanted to write the liner notes. After he passed in (I think) 2002 or 2003, the liner notes were finally written and final production on the CD was done. The result was Too Far From the Shore. My father, got a free copy early on and I borrowed it almost immediately.

So anyway, the other day I wound up on the Folk-Legacy website as probably some tangent of something else I was looking for, and decided to check, hoping against hope, they had put "Faire Winds and a Flowing Sea" on CD. AND THEY HAD!!!!!

I immediately ordered it and my own copy of "Too Far From the Shore". This was middle of the week. They arrived today, complete with liner notes. They also included with my order a live cd of Art Thieme's album, Chicago Towen & Points West which is apparently their #3 seller on the site right now. I have no idea who Art Thieme is. But I'm looking forward to listening to the CD.

Of note, their current best seller is an album called, Ballads, Broadsides and Hymns by another friend of my father's named Helen Schneyer. She also passed away within the last few years but she has an absolutely amazing voice. She used to singer a lot of gospel hymns. She also believed that "Far fetched" was not two words, but a single yiddish word... "fafetched". Kind of an aural joke. And she used to have us over every Christmas for this huge dinner when we lived in Maryland.

Okay... nostalgia over. Go listen to the music samples on the site. Support your small music label. Oh yeah, they're based in Sharon, CT.
