We're pretty happy with the new AC we got from Best Buy a few weeks ago. It's very efficient and is, IIRC, 8000BTU. EER is over 10. It's been working nicely over the past few weeks. It's still loud, like the old one, but I've no doubt at all that it's incredibly more efficient than the old one.
It's a Frigidaire. It fits most standard windows.
Your other option if you're concerned about fit is to buy a freestanding one with a vent - those are becoming more popular. Also makes it easier if it's a nice day and you just want the window open.
