Magic number is 20
Sep. 2nd, 2007 09:38 pmMathematically, it's possible for the Red Sox to wrap up the division before they next play the Yankees. Realistically, it is not. But after being swept by the Yankees and then beat by Baltimore, the no-no by Buckholtz and then winning this afternoon was quite a relief. The no-hitter may have also been a spark that Sox needed.
Thinking about that game, if Wakefield doesn't pull out of Friday's game, Tavares was supposed to start Saturday. So if Wakefield doesn't get hurt, Buckholtz likely would not have even been called up for the game much less starting it. And by being the first Red Sox rookie to pitch a no-hitter, it's a mark in the record books nobody can ever take away, no matter how many performance enhancing drugs they take. He'll always be in the history books for the Boston Red Sox, even if he never becomes a household name.
Meanwhile, I'd love to see Wakefield win the Cy Young, but I know it'll never happen. :(
