Thousands of Marines face involuntary recalls
Up to 2,500 Marines will be brought back at any one time, but there is no cap on the total number of Marines who may be forced back into service in the coming years. The call-ups will begin in the next several months.
...
Marine Col. Guy A. Stratton, head of the manpower mobilization section, estimated that there is a shortfall of about 1,200 Marines needed to fill positions in upcoming unit deployments.

Anyone know off hand how many soldiers have been killed or otherwise incapacitated from being wounded in action? I think we'll find these numbers awfully close.

Here's the official numbers as of 05 AUG 06: 751 killed, 8,052 total non-mortal casualties (http://siadapp.dior.whs.mil/personnel/CASUALTY/OIF-Total.pdf). Statistically speaking, it sucks to be a Marine in a combat zone.

Note that PTSD and other mental-health issues are likely underreported, on top of being underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Yeah, those contracts they sign are pretty sneaky.

If, for some reason, my kids end up in that world, I'll certainly make sure they read the fine print. And not believe word one that any recruiter says.
