Back at work after a weekend of NOT DOING FAIRE.
Don't get me wrong, I love doing faires, but it's nice to have a weekend off for the first time since... umm... I don't remember when. Been a long hard year, too much time away from
scullerywench and not getting to sleep in.
scullerywench is doing the Forrest of Fright in Maine at the site of the Maine Renaissance Faire. The theme is Edgar Allan Poe's characters have come to life... or more to the point... come back from the dead. They're performing the shows they're featured in and a few more. I think they should start calling it the "Forest of Creepy Looking Women" as nearly all the women are undead, and they all look creepy as hell.
In particular, there are three or four shows that involve the entire cast, and revolve around the story "The Masque of the Red Death" or at least the primary character from this story is hosting a "Masque" in his protected forrest and has invited Poe and many of his characters. The individual shows I saw involved a duel which seemed to have little to do with plot or more for the sake of putting some fighting into the show. There are two sword fights and a gun duel throughout the evening. There's also a hanging and someone gets buried alive.
The individual shows I saw were all very good. They inclued "The Torture of Johannes Junius" which is not a Poe tale but is based on trial transcripts from 1628 when Johannes Junius was tried and eventually executed for witchcraft, and the letter he managed to smuggle to his daughter. For those more familiar with Poe, I also saw performances of "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Tell-Tale Heart", the latter of which is performed by
scullerywench and she's freakin phenominal. Actually, both are really good. Well, all three are really good.
scullerywench performs "The Tell Tale Heart" by herself. You get completely drawn in as she portrays a mad-woman quite convincingly as she shakes and breaks down and through her movements. I knew she was a good actress, but she really surprised me here.
There's also two haunted hourses, one for kids and one for adults. The creepy denizens of the forest walk around creeping people out. There's a Tarot Card reader, face painting and hot beverages to be had as well.
Okay, so that was Friday night.
Saturday morning, our new bed was to arrive between 8am and 11am. Since we had got in at 4am, we were unprepared when the buzzer for the door sounded at 7:50am. New bed was there early. They came in and set it up and were gone by 7:55am. We put a sheet on it and went back to bed... mmmm.... comfy. Slept until noon. It was great. Great to sleep in. Great to sleep in with
scullerywench. Yay new bed.
Saturday night I videotaped parts of the Forrest for the director of the show. Sunday
scullerywench had to do some rehearsal stuff for a school show happening today (Monday) but I went and hung out for a while.
Was a great weekend.
